Built on the Olympic Green, Beijing National Stadium, or the Birds Nest Stadium, as it has become known, is the biggest stadium in Beijing and an important Olympic venue, which staged the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The outer shell is the worlds largest steel structure, forming part of the most complex Olympic stadium ever constructed. Some would even go as far as to say it is one of the key engineering marvels in the world today.
The 2022 Winter Olympics are around the corner. The Beijing National Stadium will witness the start of the 2022 Winter Olympics, as it is the opening and closing ceremonies venue, and will become the only stadium in the world to host both summer and winter Olympic Games ceremonies.

On December 24, 2003, work on Beijing National Stadium began at the Olympic Green [18]. [19] 17,000 construction workers were employed on the stadium at its peak. [20] Artist Helen Couchman’s book Workers (Gong Ren) included portraits of 143 migrant workers from the construction site. Ten construction-related deaths were reported by The Times on January 1, 2008, in spite of China’s government’s denials. [21] Nevertheless, Reuters revealed the following week—with the Chinese government’s approval—that just two laborers had perished. [20] All 121,000 tons of steel were made in China. The 7,811 square meter grass field was installed in a single day on May 14, 2008. [22] GreenTech ITM provided the modular turf system for the field. [23] On June 28, 2008, a ceremony marked the official opening of Beijing National Stadium, which was built as the Beijing Olympic Field. [24].

On April 2, 2009, Jackie Chan became the first performer to host a pop concert at the stadium.
On April 14, 2012, “King of Chinese Pop” Wang Leehom performed for a sold-out crowd of 90,000 people at the stadium in his first solo pop concert. [47] As part of their Mayday No Where Tour, Taiwanese band Mayday played two nights at the stadium on April 29 and 30, 2012. They were the first musical act to perform twice at the stadium. In August 2013, they made a comeback with a single show as part of their Mayday Now Here Tour. They returned to the stadium in August 2016 for three Just Rock It!!! World Tour shows and in August 2017 and August 2018 for five Mayday Life Tour shows. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their first album in 1999, they made a comeback in August 2019 and held three dates of their Just Rock It!!! World Tour.
On August 11, 2018, Chinese pop artist Jason Zhang performed at the stadium as part of the Future Live event.
Hua Chenyu, a Chinese pop and rock singer, was the first solo performer under 30 to host a concert—let alone two—on September 8–9, 2018.
The Voice of China finals and Sing! China, the Chinese version of the popular international singing competition The Voice, have been held at the stadium since 2014. To honor the occasion, the finals were typically held on October 7 or a Sunday during Golden Week.
