“Let progress be in keeping something that can never be created again.”

One of the few protected natural island areas in the mid-Atlantic region, Bird Island is the only undeveloped barrier island system that still exists in Brunswick County. More than a thousand acres of stunning salt marsh, high dunes, sand beaches, winding creeks, and a diverse range of flora and fauna can be found there.

Reaching Bird Island is easy: Just walk.

Start by driving to the intersection of 40th & Main St. (in Sunset Beach). There should be some parking available near this spot. Find the 40th St. beach access and turn right.

Once you come to signs indicating the Reserve’s boundary, continue along the beach. From there, you can stroll along the shore, pass by the Kindred Spirit Mailbox, and eventually arrive at the South Carolina border!

For your hike, we advise bringing a compact daypack that contains water, a few snacks, your phone, and maybe a blanket to stretch out on when you need a break. Its about a 2-mile round trip.

Remember to bring a hat and sunscreen! Keep in mind that there are no restrooms on the reserve, and you are required to remove any trash you bring with you. Pets must be leashed and cleaned up after. The Reserve is open year-round.

Salt and Mud Flats

Salt and mud flats, despite their apparent aridity, are an essential component of the estuary. These ever-changing conditions support a wide variety of burrowing worm species as well as shellfish like clams, oysters, mussels, and algae and algae. At low tide, a large number of shorebirds and wading birds visit the exposed mud flats for food.
