The Basic Method for Drying Chili Peppers

After harvesting, give your chili peppers a thorough wash to get rid of any dirt, then pat dry.

Arrange in a dry, well-ventilated space on a plate or a wire rack. Alternatively, you could string the chilies on thread or string and hang them to dry. You can grind up the dried chili peppers or use them as decorations once you have them, which should happen in a few weeks.

  • After harvesting, give your chili peppers a thorough wash to get rid of any dirt.
  • Cut them in half, lengthwise to expose the pepper innards.
  • Arrange the chili peppers over a baking sheet.
  • Bake at low heat, about 100 to 135 degrees.
  • There’s no specific time for baking the chili peppers to dry them out. Keep a watch on them and rotate them roughly every few minutes. To allow for some airflow, you can keep the oven door open. It will take several hours with this method. Store in the oven until they have lost all of their moisture. Use as desired!.

Drying Chili Peppers Without an Oven – Air Drying

  • In this case, dry your chili peppers whole. Do not slice.
  • Peppers are strung together using a sturdy thread, leaving a space of a few inches between each pepper.
  • Hang the chili peppers in direct sunlight. Be sure it is dry and warm.

Using this method, the jalapenos may take a few weeks to dry completely, but the process will be worthwhile!

And last but not least, for a more reliable way to dry chili peppers, you can also think about using a food dehydrator.

Using a dehydrator is most likely the simplest way to dry chili peppers. The chili peppers are enclosed in a dehydrator and dried over night at a low temperature. Slice them up before dehydrating for faster dehydration. You can find dehydrators in stores or online.

NOTE: This is the food dehydrator that I use. It works GREAT and I highly recommend it. Its an affiliate link, FYI: Food Dehydrator: Nesco Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator FD-75A – For dehydrating peppers and making powders.

FAQ

How do you dry birdseye chillies?

Simply place whole chillies on a baking tray and heat in your oven at the lowest temperature until dry. Alternatively, with a NEFF oven you can use the ‘low temperature cooking’ or ‘drying’ function. Once they’ve shrivelled and darkened in colour, you know they’re ready.

How do you preserve bird eye chillies?

First rinse the chillies in salty water to help to prevent mould. Then spread them out on some moisture-absorbent tissue in a warm place such as a greenhouse, warm windowsill or airing cupboard, turning regularly. Store in an airtight container whole or use a coffee grinder to produce chilli powder.

How long does it take for chillies to dry?

Hang the stringed peppers in a warm place where there is good sunlight absorption. Hang from the kitchen window or improvise in any other room in the house. In about 1-3 weeks, the peppers will have shriveled and crisped up enough. They are then ready for use when needed.
