Nut Milks or tea for Parrots?
Can parrots drink herbal teas? Can they have Lactaid or nut milks since they are lactose intolerant?
We apologize for the wait for our response to your inquiries regarding Kara Burns’ webinar, “What Should I Feed? Nutritionally Balanced Diets are For the Birds.” Kara’s family experienced a death, so it made sense that she would need some alone time.
It is not appropriate to feed commercial products made for people with lactose intolerance to birds. These products break down lactose into two compounds that are toxic to birds. 20%E2%80%93%20Parrots%20can%20digest%20small%20amounts%20of%20certain%20diary%20products%20and%20arenot%20100%%20lactose%20intolerant%20 Furthermore, some dairy products, like some cheeses and yogurts, don’t contain lactose or only have very little lactose in them; nevertheless, these foods should only be given occasionally and in small amounts.
Although I usually advise against it, parrots can drink herbal tea as long as it is decaffeinated, served at room temperature, and you make sure to take out any strainers or tea bags before giving it to your bird.

How to Serve Almonds to Birds
Plain, raw almonds are best for birds. To reduce choking hazards and make almonds easier for birds to eat, break them up into smaller pieces.
Steer clear of salted or roasted almonds, or any other kind of nut, as birds don’t require additional salt or other seasonings. Giving birds candied or chocolate almonds is not a good idea.
Additionally, stay away from bitter almonds since they contain ingredients that can poison birds.
Be advised that almonds have the potential to attract unforeseen guests to your bird feeding station! In addition to squirrels, you might attract visitors at night. I recently placed almonds in our depleted bird bath, but they were not consumed during the day. That night, a fox came around for a midnight snack!.
I now know that in order for the nuts to be eaten during the day, they must all be fed early in the morning!
Which Birds Might Eat Almonds?
Several backyard birds enjoy nuts, including almonds. Some of these birds are:
- Almonds would probably taste especially good to Blue Jays, who are known to have a strong taste for nuts.
- Woodpeckers: Almonds may draw the attention of these birds, which frequently consume nuts and seeds.
- Small and nimble, chickadees and nuthatches are capable of handling nuts such as almonds, particularly when broken into smaller pieces.
- Titmice: Like chickadees, they are nut-lovers and may consume almonds.
