Cookware Ask the Vet Nov 18
According to Green Pans, no lead, cadmium, PFAS, or PFOA are used in the production of their nonstick cookware. Would they be okay in a home with an Amazon parrot in a room apart from the kitchen?
Many bird owners do use the Green Pans. The toxic components of Teflon are PFOA & PTFE. Although I don’t believe it was officially prohibited, by 2016 PFOA had to be phased out of all new cookware. Although PTFE is purportedly safe and still used in some cookware, most people are smart enough to avoid it as well. The Green pans assert that their coating is non-toxic when overheated, and the ceramic cookware is meant to be a safer substitute; however, they advise keeping pets in a different room. Regardless of the cookware, this is sound advice because, even with cast iron or stainless steel, if you burn something really badly, your bird could die from the smoke or fumes. Therefore, always keep your bird in a room with a closed door for safety. If you have a vent above your stove, make sure it is properly ventilated, and keep the filter clean. Additionally, make sure the vent is always on while cooking. Even in the dead of winter, if you do burn something, open doors to the outside and run your air conditioning. Until you have removed all smoke and fumes, confine your bird to the other enclosed space. The problem with PTFE is that when it gets too hot, it can release poisonous, odorless fumes, whereas PFOA releases odorless fumes. Normal smoke from non-toxic cookware can be extinguished fast, and if your bird is in a separate room with the door closed, it is unlikely to reach him.

If the pan is not well seasoned, food may have low levels of inorganic iron, but this is unrelated to the problem of “fumes” that are poisonous to birds.
They also can be seasoned for cooking eggs, etc. Read up on the care of stainless steel cookware online and learn to enjoy cooking again. Ideally you want 18/0 Stainless.
As demonstrated in the video below, you can properly season a stainless pan to make it nonstick.
Thus, when we discuss ceramic-coated cookware, we are referring to a metal that has been covered in a layer of ceramic, typically hard anodized aluminum.
Cooking requires a slight learning curve, but stainless steel is long-lasting and safe for birdsas long as they stay out of the kitchen during cooking.
