With her powerful and empathetic performance, excellent direction, and liberal use of blindfolds, Sandra Bullock elevates a traditional story to a suspenseful and impactful level. Even though the filmmakers make an effort to offer some hope towards the conclusion of Bird Box, it’s not very comforting to think about the five years during which nothing has been able to stop the terror’s onslaught. It’s necessary to suspend disbelief and avoid reading too much into certain plot points, but the constant tension and desire to cheer on the heroic characters make for an exciting ride that’s appropriate only for mature teens and adults.

Don’t be guided by age-based ratings – this movie could be immensely disturbing for anyone who’s considered suicide Forget my 18+ rating. It’s a good movie for fully-grown, mature adults, who are confident in their current level of mental health only.I’m a parent. I thought this would be similar to ‘A Quiet Place’, and it is in some ways. But for anyone who’s wondered about suicide, this movie could also be named ‘100 ways to kill yourself’. I’ve known and worked with adults who would find this movie extremely disturbing and it could prompt dark and depressing thoughts, let alone its possible effect on kids. It doesn’t glamourise suicide at all, but it focuses on it relentlessly. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone, of any age, who has had problems with significant anxiety, depression or suicidal ideation. Otherwise, it’s a very well-done movie.
