November–December 2016: A 4,500km journey around Tasmania in pursuit of the platypus and other peculiar Australian creatures
The Red-Streamertail is a magnificent, medium-sized hummingbird that is unique to Jamaica. This island’s diverse range of habitats, which include montane forests, lowland forests, second growth, and other wooded areas, are home to this Jamaican endemic. It is not found in arid environments in the island’s easternmost region.
The glossy black head, neck, and tail of the Black-billed Magpie, along with its white underbelly, give it a unique appearance. The bird is very gregarious and is frequently observed in groups as it forages on the ground for food.
The Long-tailed Jaeger is a migratory bird that spends the winter in the North Pacific and the Southern Ocean after breeding in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. With a dark back, a white underbelly, and a long, thin tail, it has a striking appearance.
The White-throated Magpie-Jay is a large species of jay found in habitats of tropical dry forests. This fancy jay ranges in distribution from western Mexico’s Jalisco to western Costa Rica. This species of bird is fairly common and is typically found in boisterous flocks of ten or more birds.
The lengthy tail of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher contributes to its ability to fly by assisting it in keeping stability and balance while gliding through the atmosphere. In addition to being used in courtship displays to entice a mate, the long tail feathers can also be used to scare off potential predators and intimidate other birds.
