It doesn’t go all the way through but if she breaks it she will have a shorter beak on the top than the bottom.
Is there some kind of filler that I can use that is safe until her beak grows again? Do you have any suggestions?
It’s filled with thousands of nerves called corpuscles of Herbst and trimming a beak potentially causes your bird a lot of pain.
That said you may want to let nature take its course and introduce soft foods like hand feeding formula to reduce the physical stress of eating.
I did have a Zoom appointment with my Veterinarian and I am letting nature take its course with soft food and a mixture of Listerine and water sprayed on the beak notch.
I don’t as a rule, trim her beak myself, but the Vet said it was a good idea in this case and of course I am staying home these days.

I gave him some fruits and greens to eat, and although he hadn’t been with us for that long, he seemed pretty hungry and didn’t hesitate to try it, he wasn’t entirely satisfied. Hes been pretty upset hes not able to eat seeds. When he realizes he can’t eat, he tries again and flies around the room, screaming.
I just joined this sub to ask about it, so I’m completely new. Please let me know if I need to add any tags.
Hi Reddit, so for the past few weeks, my family has been caring for this cockatiel. As I was hand-feeding him today, I noticed that he was just picking up the seeds and then they became stuck in this one spot rather than actually eating them. Upon closer inspection, I noticed a gap on one side of his lower beak. It’s large enough to fit the tip of the tongue inside. It’s just big enough that he can’t properly bite down on seeds, so I don’t think it’s serious. I’m not sure how long it has been like this, but until today, he was able to eat normally.
Having said that, I was wondering if there were any appropriate softer foods to feed birds or if fruits were the best option in this situation.
Do you have any recommendations for a safe filler that I could use until her beak grows back?

My veterinarian and I did have a Zoom appointment, and I’m letting nature take its course by giving the beak notch a spray of water mixed with Listerine and soft food.

Normally, I wouldn’t trim her beak myself, but the veterinarian advised it in this particular instance, so I’m staying at home these days.
