Edible Bird’s Nests Easter Activity

My patience usually wears thin by the end of Spring Break, so I looked for things to do with my kids to keep them busy. I had to ask my friend for the recipe after I realized I had hit upon something special when she shared her recipe for an adorable edible bird nest on Facebook.

That evening, she kindly brought the handwritten recipe for bird nests to our daughters’ gymnastics practice. I can’t even recall the last time I received a handwritten recipe, but let me tell you how refreshing it is to receive one in this day and age.

Anyway, a cursory look at the recipe revealed that it’s essentially just a straightforward chow mein noodle version of Rice Krispies Treats.

How To Make Edible Bird Nests For Easter

Just mini marshmallows, butter, vanilla extract, and dry chow mein noodles make up the ingredients. You can stuff the nests full of any kind of confection you like.

My children selected Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Pastel Candy Eggs and Peeps in every color. Even though I’ve never been a huge Peeps fan, those Reese’s Pieces eggs are delicious!

The nests were super simple to make. I discovered that the simplest method to create the appearance of a bird’s nest was to form the balls fairly tightly at first, then hollow out the center. Aren’t they so cute?.

Even though it didn’t keep them busy for as long as *I* would have preferred, the kids loved creating and decorating their nests, not to mention devouring them afterwards!

The Bird’s Nest Cookies can be stored for a few days at room temperature, though this mostly relies on the room’s temperature. They become a little messy if they get too warm because they melt when you touch them.

The best place to keep them is in the refrigerator in an airtight container. They will keep for about a week. In order to make them easier to eat, I advise removing them half an hour before serving. You don’t want them too hard.

To make ahead: Make the nests, but don’t fill them. Nests can be frozen for up to three months when placed in a zip-lock bag. After thawing them in the fridge, place the miniature eggs inside.
