how to get bird poop off mailbox

I learned about cleaning a mailbox with Bar Keepers Friend the hard way. It was because of birds. I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but a flock of birds must have dive-bombed my mailbox with droppings. So, I googled this because it’s happened to my car, patio furniture, and now my mailbox. I didn’t find any scientific evidence or explanation for why birds do this, but they do. Has it happened to you?

I was hoping there was a name for this phenomenon, but I didn’t find one, so I’m calling it a mass dive drop. I can tell you this. My mailbox was a mess.

I knew I could use BKF products on a steel mailbox to wipe away rust, grime, and dirt. Bar Keepers Friend Powder Cleanser, MORE Spray + Foam, orSoft Cleanser would work. However, even on an unpainted steel box, you should test the product on a small area, such as the underside of the box.

As we all know New England is getting hammered with snow this year! And I had so much snow on the deck that I had to use the snowblower to get it off. Im anticipatin… See more

Vinegar seems to be the answer to everything. So how do I use it to clean my mirror?.

Cleaning a Mailbox with Bar Keepers Friend

My mailbox is steel, but it’s painted black. When using BKF on painted or uncoated metal surfaces, exercise caution. Even though the box was completely covered in gummy guano, I reasoned that I had nothing to lose. I would repaint it or get a new box if I scrubbed off the paint while cleaning the feces.

I debated between using BKF MORE Spray Foam Cleaner and Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleaner, but ultimately went with the more traditional option. I started by sprinkling as much dirt as I could with my hose. Next, I used the powder and a small amount of water to make a paste. I then applied the paste to the box, gave it a minute to sit, and used a gentle cloth to wipe it off. Much of the avian muck was eliminated by that process, but not all of it. There were white smudges all over my mailbox.

Since I knew I needed a new toothbrush anyway, I took mine out of the bathroom, added some more paste, and used my “old” toothbrush to get really aggressive on the mailbox. I eventually succeeded in getting rid of the bird droppings from my mailbox after making multiple applications. Geeza, did I mention that the little handle that opens the box was covered in poop?

I’m now prepared for my friends’ next surprise attack. Who knows where the next sneaky assault will come. It could be my front window, bicycle, or my fountain. Either way, I’m ready for them.

Cleaning a Mailbox with Bar Keepers Friend, Nothing to Lose

Unless you test this procedure on your own box first, or if you’re like me and figure, “What have I got to lose?,” I won’t recommend it. At my house, Bird’s zero Randy and a spotlessly clean mailbox represented the final score. I regret not being more astute to take before and after pictures, but I was too focused on the challenge to think clearly. Therefore, please take some before and after pictures to share with us if you encounter a horrible hen raid and bring BKF to the fight. You can upload your photos here.

FAQ

Does vinegar dissolve bird poop?

You likely have distilled vinegar or some other type of vinegar at home. The acidic properties of vinegar make it easy to remove bird poop and prevent it from forming on your siding. You can put vinegar in a spray bottle or apply it directly to a sponge to remove the bird poop more easily.

What dissolves dried bird poop?

A simple solution of baking soda and hot water will do the trick. In a 32-ounce spray bottle, mix a quart of warm or hot water with 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Shake and squirt the solution on any dry bird poop stain, allowing it to soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, rinse with a hose.
