how to discourage doves from bird feeder

‘How do I keep bully birds away from my feeders?’ This is a question I often hear from our customers. Some of these birds are here all year and some will be migrating back to their breeding grounds this spring. House Sparrows, Starlings, Mourning Doves, Grackles and Pigeons can fall into this category.

These birds will often come in large flocks chasing our lovely songbirds away. As much as we love our Hummingbirds, they can also be very aggressive at their nectar feeders, chasing other Hummingbirds away. Here are some suggestions that may help you to enjoy more songbirds and less bully birds.

I hope this helps you to enjoy more songbirds over the coming months. Our staff is always here to help you explore new possibilities.

On a separate note, over the past week I have had some customers tell me they have seen a number of Robins arriving in their yards. Food is scarce for them at this time of year. You can help by offering mealworms, small pieces of apple, red grapes cut in half as well as raspberry, strawberry or grape jelly, (not sugar-free). Fruit can be placed on a Platform Feeder and if you have a Fruit Feeder for Orioles, jelly can be added to them.

Hi! I am new to bird feeding. I began with a simple popsicle stick feeder filled with safflower seeds. I had cardinals right away and they love it. But a few days later, at least seven doves have stormed my two feeders, which are located in separate trees. They flung the seeds to the ground, frightened the cardinals, and then consumed them all. They returned to the feeders and, due to their weight, broke them. I may need more glue next time, granted. But, I donôt like the doves scaring away the cardinals. If they stayed low to search for seeds near the feeders, I wouldn’t mind having them, but if they’re going to frighten away my lovely cardinals, I’d prefer not to have them. I’ve read that you should buy a special feeder, but I wanted to know if there was anything I could do about my popsicle feeders to deter them from coming. Any suggestions? My kids made these, and they’re overjoyed that the tiny red birds visit their creations for food. Thanks! Sponsored.

FAQ

What is a good dove deterrent?

To prevent doves and other pest birds from perching on property surfaces, installing Bird Spikes would be the ideal solution.

Do mourning doves eat from bird feeders?

Mourning Doves eat corn, millet and most often the seeds found in grasses, flowers and of course bird feeders. They then fly off to higher ground to let the food digest. Platform bird feeders are about the only feeders that Mourning Doves are comfortable on. These large, open feeders are perfect for Mourning Doves.
