Keynote Speaker: NBA Hall of Famer Known for his Time with the Boston Celtics; Consultant for the Indiana Pacers

American former professional basketball player, coach, and National Basketball Association (NBA) executive Larry Joe Bird Bird, also known as “the Hick from French Lick” and “Larry Legend,” is considered by many to be one of the all-time great basketball players. The only other person in NBA history to receive the titles of Coach of the Year, Executive of the Year, All-Star MVP, Finals MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Most Valuable Player is him.

Growing up, he was a local basketball star in French Lick, Indiana. Bird was heavily recruited and signed on to play college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers under coach Bob Knight. However, after just one month, Bird left the team and went back to French Lick to attend a nearby college. He played for the Sycamores for three years after attending Indiana State University the following year. Bird chose to remain in college and returned for the 1978–79 season after being selected by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft following his second year at Indiana State. He then led his team to an undefeated regular season. The season culminated in a national championship game between Michigan State and Indiana State, which featured a much-anticipated matchup between Bird and legendary Michigan State player Magic Johnson. This matchup marked the start of a long-lasting rivalry between the two that lasted for more than ten years. Michigan State won, ending the Sycamores undefeated streak.

Bird made an instant impression upon joining the NBA in 1979–80. Playing primarily at power forward, he helped the Celtics win 32 games more than the previous campaign before the team was eliminated in the conference finals. Throughout his 13-year professional career, he was a member of the Boston Celtics, helping them win three NBA titles and five trips to the NBA Finals. He spent the majority of his career playing with center Robert Parish and forward Kevin McHale, who are regarded by some as the best front court in NBA history. Bird was the only forward in league history to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award three times (1984–1986), win two NBA Finals MVP awards, and be named an NBA All-Star twelve times. Bird also competed for the 1992 U.S. team that won a gold medal. S. Olympic basketball team, known as the “Dream Team”. As a player, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice: as an individual in 1998 and as a member of the “Dream Team” in 2010. He was selected for the 75th Anniversary Team list in 2021 after being included on the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players in NBA History list in 1996.

He was a versatile forward who could play both inside and outside. He was also among the first in the league to use the newly implemented three-point line. In 2016, Fox Sports named Bird the greatest NBA small forward of all time. Following his playing career, Bird led the Indiana Pacers as head coach from 1997 to 2000. After leading the Pacers to a berth in the 2000 NBA Finals, he was named NBA Coach of the Year for the 1997–98 campaign. Bird joined the Pacers in 2003 and served as their president of basketball operations until his retirement in 2012. For the 2012–13 NBA season, he was named Executive of the Year. In 2013, Bird rejoined the Pacers as president of basketball operations, a position he held until 2017.
