Act III: Rebuilding and recommitting

Scene: September 2015. Night of the WNBA draft lottery. Breanna Stewart, a standout player for UConn who has already won three straight NCAA titles, is the esteemed No. 1 pick next spring. Seattle has the best odds. Bird, who is watching at a sports bar outside of Seattle, realizes that WNBA president Laurel Richie will end her career where it began when she watches her open an envelope bearing the Storms’ logo.

“Stewie may not realize it, but she has greatly contributed to saving my career here,” Bird remarked. If we dont get the No. 1 pick that year, I dont know. I really dont know. However, who knows if I’ll survive in New York as long as I have so far. I’m glad things turned out the way they did because everything happens for a reason. “.

Seattle had to rebuild for the first time in Bird’s career in order to position itself to acquire Stewart. Due to injuries, Jackson stopped participating in the WNBA in 2012, and the roster had aged and atrophied. When Agler left the Storm in 2014 to join the Los Angeles Sparks, the team had just finished with a 12-22 record. Birds future in Seattle was also becoming a question mark.

Bird stated, “I had to ask myself this question. Well, someone else asked it to me this way, I believe it was [UConn] coach (Geno) Auriemma): Do you ever want to play in a meaningful WNBA game again? I was like, Oh man, when you put it that way. “.

The possibility of playing for her hometown New York Liberty loomed. The Liberty were not only a strong contender, but they had added former Seattle teammates Wright and Swin Cash, two of Bird’s closest friends in the league, in addition to Tina Charles and Epiphanny Prince, who were both native New Yorkers and had played with Bird in her last season.

Inevitably, they tried to recruit Bird to New York. And Bird could easily picture himself performing for friends and family at the storied Madison Square Garden.

Bird remarked, “I really fell in love with the fantasy of that.” “It became very attractive. “.

Especially as losses mounted during the 2015 season.

“Were losing a lot of games,” Bird recalled. “Thats what we signed up for. Thats what I signed up for. Naturally, the fact that Stewie would be graduating from college the following year served as a major motivator, but things became challenging. Losing is hard.

“You just want to feel good out there. It’s not always about winning and losing; sometimes you just want to feel good about yourself. It was tough. “.

Bird made plans to guarantee she would continue to play at a high level well into her 30s at the same time she was choosing where she would end her career. Bird started collaborating closely year-round with performance coach Susan King Borchardt, who had previously worked seasonally for the Seattle organization. The difference was evident.

Wright remarked, “She did an amazing job of deciding that she was going to invest in and take care of her body in these latter years.” “I understand that’s a frustrating aspect, given your history of knee problems. However, I believe Sue did an amazing job of deciding to commit to this, and it has clearly greatly benefited her over the past five years.

“Once you saw her in action, its like, Oh, s—. Thats real-deal stuff. I think it’s great that she committed to that at that age. “.

In the meantime, Boucek, who took over as head coach from Agler in 2015, was putting together an offense that would showcase Bird’s ability to make decisions and include Stewart, should the Storm be able to select her.

Bird expressed her gratitude by saying, “I’m so grateful for that. I was at a point in my career where I felt like I was plateauing and needed to change my diet.” That style really breathed new life for me. It was made with players like myself in mind; it wasn’t like it was tailored just for me. “.

Bird missed four of the final five games of 2015, including a loss to San Antonio in the regular-season finale that guaranteed the Storm the best odds in the draft lottery, as Seattle and the San Antonio Silver Stars battled for first place in the draft lottery. The Birds’ free agency selection was evident when Seattle’s winning lineup was announced. She attended meetings to begin the free agency process, but she never gave leaving much thought.

Bird said, “I knew in my heart that if we got the No 1 pick I was not going anywhere. “.

Act I: ‘Big Kids’

Scene: October 2004. Confetti is falling at KeyArena. The Storm defeated the Connecticut Sun in front of a sellout crowd to win Seattle’s first major professional sports championship since the Sonics 25 years prior. In their third season together, Bird and Jackson celebrate winning what appears to be the first of many titles together.

Bird recalled, “We were completely inexperienced and had no idea what we were doing.” “It felt amazing. It was the first time. There was a lot of excitement because it was the city’s first in [25 years]. We were 23. Every year, we thought we would make it to the Finals, but we didn’t “.

When Bird was drafted No. When the Storm released number one in 2002, the franchise was in its infancy. Just two years had passed since the WNBA had expanded to Seattle, and in contrast to other expansion teams that grew rapidly, the Storm took their time building. This led to back-to-back first picks that produced Bird and Jackson, two exceptionally gifted basketball players whose styles blended together flawlessly.

“She and Lauren are both big kids,” Jenny Boucek, who joined the Storm prior to Birds’ second season as Anne Donovan’s assistant, said. “They played for the love of the game. They had an inexplicable joy about them, and that was their edge. Many of the things that hinder teams and players were overshadowed by Sue and Lauren’s joy, which gave them a fearlessness and almost naiveté. They were just having so much fun.

Anne found that to be somewhat of a challenge because it went against who she is.” I would frequently say to Anne, “We need to make the most of this.” This is our edge. Even though it’s not how you work, our top players do best in an enjoyable, lighthearted atmosphere. “.

Though it’s difficult to imagine now, Bird had to figure out early in her career how to be a leader in a locker room full of more experienced players. After Jackson won MVP for the first time in the 2003 season, which ended with Seattle barely making the playoffs, the Storm concentrated on bringing in more seasoned players. After the Cleveland Rockers folded, Seattle added two veteran starters by selecting Betty Lennox in a dispersal draft and trading for Sheri Sam and important reserve Janell Burse.

Bird remarked, “I think the whole idea back then was that Sue and Lauren are the cornerstones right now, this duo that we need to build around.” “What can we do to make it easier for them to play as young players? Can we just get them outside and have fun?”

The moves worked as envisioned. Thanks to upsets elsewhere, the Storm won 20 games for the first time and had home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Bird led Seattle to the WNBA Finals with 14 assists despite breaking her nose in the team’s first-round victory over the Minnesota Lynx and needing surgery the day before the pivotal Game 3 of the conference finals.

When the Storm returned home to a packed KeyArena, they won the next two games despite losing the first one in Connecticut. Lennox was named Finals MVP, and Seattle hosted a championship celebration at home.

The Storms championship roster suffered because of free agency, which was added to the WNBA as part of a collective bargaining agreement after Birds’ rookie season. Sam, fellow starter Kamila Vodichkova, and Tully Bevilaqua, the Birds’ backup, all left. The following season, Seattle managed to win 20 games, but the Houston Comets upset them in the first round. When Jackson won MVP again in 2007, the Storm had fallen to 500 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Bird remarked, “We never got to build on our championship roster.” “Free agency entered the picture, so we were never able to see what would happen with it. Let’s go back to 2006 and 2007, and to be completely honest, those rosters were insufficient to win. Certainly, we could have done better, but those teams weren’t necessarily championship teams. “.

Following Game 4 on Tuesday, Sue Bird waved goodbye as the Climate Pledge Arena crowd chanted “Thank you, Sue.” ” Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty s.

Scene: September 2010. Philips Arena, Atlanta. After a 28-6 regular season, Coco Miller fouls on a 3-point shot that would have tied the game, and the Storm finish the postseason undefeated. In 2004, Bird did not win a WNBA championship. She leaps into Jacksons arms to celebrate.

“In a sense, we were very mission-oriented,” Bird said of the 2010 campaign. “There was a mission. It was to win. “.

Under coach Brian Agler, Boucek rejoined Seattle’s coaching staff in 2010 and witnessed five straight first-round exits.

“I believe that everyone took it for granted that it came so easily and that we would simply win a lot of them,” Boucek remarked. “It hadn’t happened in our world for a very long time.” Thus, there was a focus, a seriousness that wasn’t present the first time, and an understanding of how challenging this was. “.

This was also a different version of Bird. She didn’t improve as much as one might have thought in her mid-20s after taking home the first title. Her first four seasons were all on the All-WNBA First Team; however, at the ages of 25 and 26, she was left off of both teams. Bird’s scoring average fell to 10 in 2007 due to midseason arthroscopic knee surgery. 4 PPG, the lowest level in ten years

Due to Jackson’s injuries sustained during the team’s 2008 and 2009 first-round exits, Bird was forced to play more aggressively offensively. In 2008, her scoring average bounced back to 14. 1 PPG. In 2011, Bird averaged a career-high 14. 7 points, earning All-WNBA honors both years.

Bird remarked, “I always joke that I’m a Robin and not a Batman.” “But Im also like a chameleon in some ways. I have to fit into what the team needs. We had this player that everything was based around. It was like, “Okay, we have to pick up the slack now.” “.

During this time, Bird’s propensity to make huge shots late in games to help the Storm put opponents away earned her the memorable but vulgar moniker Sue Die B—-es Bird on a well-known WNBA message board. Teammate Tanisha Wright delighted in joking with her about it.

Bird remarked, “I don’t know when I first heard it, but that’s one hell of a fing nickname.” Its a compliment. “.

Bird made two game-winning shots in the 2010 playoffs alone, helping the Storm to maintain their undefeated record. With 3:21 remaining in Game 2 in Phoenix, Bird moved off the ball as Wright ran a pick-and-roll and finished with a catch-and-shoot 3 to cap a comeback from behind 12 points to win the series.

A week later, Bird and Jackson were playing pick-and-roll when Jackson’s sliding screen allowed Bird to win Game 1 of the WNBA Finals against the Dream with a pull-up jumper in the dying seconds.

“Sue Bird is the most clutch shooter I’ve ever encountered,” Agler remarked. “She frequently accomplished that during the years I was there with her ability to make crucial free throws and shots in the closing moments of the game.” I could never have more faith in anyone else than her. “.

Another turning point for Bird came in the 2010 postseason: after a rule temporarily limiting teams to one full-time assistant coach prevented Boucek from traveling for playoff games, they started watching film together to analyze opposing defenses and determine how Bird could best counter them. According to Agler, this “took her game to a new level.” “.

“Sues brain is very much like a computer,” Boucek explained. She is the best at retrieving relevant information from vast amounts of data at the appropriate moment that I have ever seen, provided that the files are placed in the file cabinets and the database is loaded. She would use her genius to pull from it when she got to the game, but she was ready. “.

Finding any advantage during a playoff run in which the team’s final four victories came by three points or less was Bird’s primary motivation for doing the additional study.

Bird remarked, “If you can steal a possession in that way, just by outwitting them.” I’ve come to realize that a lot of my strength comes from my ability to use my IQ to manipulate people. Jenny helped me establish that. “.

“Whether I retire tomorrow or in 20 years, I just want to get as much out as I can.”

Herschel and Nancy Bird welcomed Sue Bird into the world on October 16, 1980, in Syosset, New York, under the name Suzanne Brigit Bird.

She was partially inspired to try out for a few school sports, including basketball, soccer, tennis, and track, by her five-year-old sister Jen.

“A young child’s simple wish to emulate her older sister Bird went on, “I basically just followed everything that she did, and fortunately for me, she was able to pick up a basketball.” ”.

She began participating in the sixth-grade Amateur Athletic Union basketball game at the age of eleven.

During her freshman and sophomore years at Syosset High School, she persisted in playing basketball. However, she soon enrolled for her junior and senior years at Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York.

In her junior year, the Royals went 24-3; in her senior year, they went undefeated and won the National title in addition to the New York State Championship.

She also participated in and scored 11 points in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game.

Several colleges and universities were hoping to recruit Bird including the University of Connecticut (UConn), Stanford University, and Vanderbilt University.

“Sue doesn’t consider herself the best player in the country. In a 1998 interview, UConn Women’s Head Coach Geno Auriemma stated, “I think she’s a very good player.”

Bird remembers speaking with Coach Auriemma over the phone a few days prior to her decision, during which he inquired about her feelings. In response, she said, “Well, I think my head might be saying Vanderbilt, but in my heart I feel like I want to go to UConn.” ” He replied, “Well, I hope you follow your heart. ”.

Bird choose her heart and enrolled at the University of Connecticut, joining the women’s basketball team with the #10 jersey number.

Her time at UConn was, in her words, “tough, not easy, but very rewarding.” ”.

During UConn’s sophomore season, Coach Auriemma’s statement, “Anything that bad that happens, it’s your fault,” stood out to Bird as a game-changing moment. ”.

Bird was perplexed by this at the time and said, “It doesn’t matter.” It will always be your fault, regardless of whether you or she turns it over. ”.

Bird comprehended his message, which was that she must accept accountability for everything. Bird was more reserved and shy at the time, but that encouragement helped her come out of her shell right away.

She knew she needed to be this vocal leader. Bird’s mentality was to change everyone’s perception of her.

She consequently guided her squad to a 36-1 record in both the 2000 NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament and the Big East Championship.

The Huskies finished 32-3 during her junior year, losing their Final Four matchup with Notre Dame, a Big East rival of UConn.

However, Bird won the Wade Trophy, Honda Sports Award, and Naismith Award for College Player of the Year during her final season, when the Huskies went 39-0.

As her time playing basketball at UConn came to an end, Bird established the following records and won the following honors:

  • Ranking No. 24 on the 1,000-point list with 1,378 points
  • Ranking No. 2 in assists with 585
  • Ranking No. 7 with 243 steals
  • Ranking No. 1 in the three-point field goal percentage (45. 9) with a free throw percentage (89. 2).
  • Won 2 National Championships
  • won three Big East championships as well as the regular season championship.
  • The Nancy Lieberman Award’s inaugural recipient in 2000, 2001, and 2002
  • Set her overall record of 114-4
  • became a part of the University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball “Huskies of Honor” Recognition Program’s inaugural class of inductees in 2006

WNBA Presents: WNBA Revealed: Sue Bird – Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm reflects on her journey from High School to College and ultimately to the WNBA. – WNBA

Bird describes his transition from UConn to the WNBA as “like a crazy whirlwind,” going from “the minute that we finished that season [at UConn] to getting drafted [by the WNBA’s Seattle Storm].”

Bird was chosen by the Seattle Storm with the first overall pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft.

Bird initially faced some mental challenges, but she soon learned to “chill out” because no one else was displaying the same response and she accepted losing games as they were.

Sue also needed to figure out how to get along with Lauren Jackson, who was selected first overall by the Seattle Storm the year prior.

Jackson might not have been a fan of Bird at first because of all the hype surrounding Bird’s UConn Undefeated Championship title, etc.

Otherwise, it was quite the opposite story on the court as they hit it off right away.

For example, during one of the earlier games, one announcer could be heard reminiscing about plays like “Christenson in the inbound, stolen by Bird, she hands off to Jackson for an easy layin” and “Oh my, Bird gives it to Lauren Jackson” as she scored a point for Storm.

“I feel fairly comfortable stating that we quickly gained each other’s trust and a measure of respect to the point where I could be in her ear. I’m telling you now, she won’t let just anybody in her ear,” Bird remarked.

As Bird recalls, the two were able to establish a connection on the court rather quickly, and a year or so later, they became friends.

Bird participated in her first Olympic Games in the summer of 2004.

Bird talks about her experience playing in the 2004 Summer Olympics’ United States Women’s Basketball Team as such “Fast forward to the Olympics. That was my first dose of being around Dawn Staley, Sheryl Swoopes, and Lisa Leslie and it was intimidating at first. Here I am supposed to be a leader and a vocal leader. How do you tell Lisa Leslie what to do?… You don’t.”

Bird goes on, “I recall Dawn Staley grabbing me aside and telling me that I was chosen for this team and that I needed to do the things that brought me this far. ”.

Bird had the experience of observing Dawn and mentally recording her actions, words, and the reasons behind them. All of which enabled Bird to have a positive international playing experience and contribute to the team.

Bird remembers her winning experiences.

Seattle Storm had won the team’s second Championship title in winning the 2010 WNBA Championship. After the finals, Bird mentioned to the media “There’s a lot of ups and downs, so to win, I can’t even describe it. It’s a very complete feeling.”

Sue Bird had the opportunity to surprise a group of students at Christ the King Regional High School in March 2015 by paying them a visit.

In response to a student who asked, “If you hadn’t pursued basketball, what would you have done,” Bird said, “I didn’t have to think about anything else the minute I graduated [from UConn].” In that sense, I was somewhat fortunate, so I’m not sure Right now I’m doing a lot of ESPN commentating. ”.

Bird becomes the first player in WNBA history to score at least 5,000 points and dish out 2,000 assists during the 2015 Seattle Storm vs. New York Liberty game. She was the only WNBA player to have accomplished such a significant feat in basketball history at the time.

Since then, the Seattle Storm has won the 2018 WNBA Championship by defeating the Washington Mystics 3-0 and the 2020 WNBA Championship by defeating the Las Vegas Aces 3-0.

In retrospect, Bird says she was fortunate because, by the time she was 23, she had triumphed in every endeavor she took part in. Ever since, people have asked her, “What’s next?” Usually, Bird responds with more victories. Certainly, she realizes that can’t be the answer for everything.

“There is no better teammate than Sue. For me, there’s no better friend or point guard than him. We played together in Russia for nearly ten years, during which time I had many memorable moments with her both on and off the court. Sue has been the best point guard I’ve ever played with because we went to college together and she is the one who has sacrificed for others. ” said Diana Taurasi.

“Her deminer, I think is her number one asset. I like to say that she has an excellent antenna because she is always present and aware of everything. She is truly adept at focusing on whatever is required at that precise moment. You very rarely can catch her off guard. She has total control over her thoughts, feelings, and physical self. She can now lead a team on the floor as a result. ” said Geno Auriemma, head coach of Team USA.

On June 16, 2022, Seattle Storm point guard and WNBA legend Sue Bird announced that the 2022 WNBA season (Bird’s 21st year in the league) would be her final one as a player in the WNBA.

Bird played in 19 seasons during his 21-year career with the Storm, which is the most of any player in WNBA history.

In addition to being recognized on the All-Decade Team (2006), Top 15 Players (2011), Top 20@20 (2016), and W25 team in 2021 as one of the 25 greatest and most influential players in league history, she has been honored on all of the WNBA’s milestone teams.

Bird has also won four WNBA championships, two NCAA championships, five EuroLeague titles, and a record five Olympic gold medals. She has also been honored as an All-WNBA selection eight times and selected to a WNBA record twelve all-star games.

Reporters were informed this year that she believes she has played at a very high level both mentally and physically for as long as she can.

Bird is excited about the things that a basketball player cannot do during the season, like setting an alarm for early morning workouts and going on actual vacations without thinking about the next season.

But because they are team-related, she will miss the “grind” moments, challenging practices, and demanding travel schedules.

Bird knows it will be difficult to replace the things that come with being a professional athlete, but she hopes to find something that fulfills her in some other way.

CNN’s WNBA Legend Sue Bird To Retire After This Season noted the announcement made for a combination of a happy and sad day for Bird.
