Tips on how to cook a RedBird turkey for Thanksgiving.

Plan on 1 1/2 pounds of (uncooked) turkey per person.

Cooking Stuffing: If you prefer stuffing inside the bird, pack it loosely. Otherwise, it is safer to cook the stuffing in a separate baking dish. Before serving, the stuffing should test at 165 degrees Fahrenheit on a thermometer.

Adjust the oven or roaster to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (see the charts below for the exact temperature).

Check the temperature while roasting by sticking a thermometer into the thigh’s deepest area. Once the turkey reaches 165 degrees F, it is safe to eat.

Resting Time: Let turkey rest 20 minutes before carving.

Remove the giblets and neck from the turkey before placing it in the oven.

Plastic Leg Clamp: If you are not deep-frying your turkey, you can leave the plastic leg clamp on while it roasts. It is safe at temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit because it is composed of heat-resistant nylon.

Unstuffed Turkey:

8 – 12 pounds: 2 3/4 – 3 hours

12 – 16 pounds: 3 – 4 hours

16 – 20 pounds: 4 – 4 1/2 hours

20 – 24 pounds: 4 1/2 to 5 hours

Stuffed Turkey:

8 – 12 pounds: 3 – 3 1/2 hours

12 – 16 pounds: 3 1/2 – 4 1/4 hours

16 – 20 pounds: 4 1/4 – 4 3/4 hours

20 – 24 pounds: 4 3/4 – 5 1/4 hours

Never forget to use a meat thermometer, as mentioned above, to confirm the temperature.

Your turkey will remain fresh until the use-by or freeze-by date on the label if you store it in a cool area of your refrigerator.
