When I was a miserable mother 14 years ago, I came across a blog. Then, another one. And another. I felt a connection with people I had never met for the first time in a very long time. It also helped me feel less isolated in my life and experiences. I therefore created my blog without knowing what I was doing, searching online for “how to make a blog,” coding it myself, and naming it after my two daughters, Jemma “birdie” and Maya “papaya.”

Every day, I ask myself, “Who am I?” and learn more about myself. However, just to give you a brief overview, I’m a mother of four children, ages one to sixteen. I was divorced and then remarried, and we are now a perfect match. Upon becoming weary of body-perfecting habits and social media, I made the decision to alter my public persona. I now enjoy having thought-provoking social media discussions about life and our experiences in it after overcoming my perfectionism, disordered eating, body shame, and a host of other issues.

I set pretty strict boundaries between my time with my family and my work. I don’t usually “work” on the weekends or in the evenings, for example. I make every effort to work from 9 to 5, but occasionally I have to work after they go to bed in order to meet deadlines or make up lost time.

It started during a phase of my life when I was a stay-at-home mother, struggling to feel connected to the outside world while living six hours away from friends and family. I was astounded to see how I felt seen in these shared experiences when I started reading blogs. But, eventually, I wanted to talk back, write, create, craft. Thus, I started The Birds Papaya with a broken laptop and searched “how to code a blog” online.
