Valley Splendor Wild Bird Food Black Oil Sunflower

Black oil sunflower seeds are one of the most nutritious, popular, and versatile seeds you can put in your back yard feeders. This is one of several varieties of black oil sunflower seeds I’ve purchased from Aldi. The brand, Valley Splendor, also has products available for purchase at retailers like Walmart and Amazon.

I’ve always used Aldi’s black oil sunflower seeds to successfully feed the birds and squirrels in my backyard, though I don’t do it on purpose. I receive a good number of cardinals, which is nice to see. Similar to Aldi’s suet, bags like these are only occasionally found in stores, so I usually buy multiple bags because once they’re gone, they’re gone until the next time.

This 20-pound bag, produced in Fargo, North Dakota, by Red River Commodities, claims to be high in fat and protein to provide birds with extra energy. Cardinals, crossbills, buntings, grosbeaks, goldfinches, linnets, bluebirds, blue jays, and woodpeckers are said to love these seeds.

The bag suggests resealing and keeping the contents separate from other food items in a closed container in a cool, dry location. According to the statement, this helps guard against insect infestations that whole grain seed products may experience. I keep all of my bird seed and suet in a metal trash can with a tight-fitting lid in my garage.

The bag features a seal from the Wild Bird Feeding Institute, a trade association for the wild bird and back yard wildlife feeding industry. The bag also has a Cornell Lab of Ornithology Lab Sponsor seal.

A sort of trail mix for birds is described on the back of the bag as follows:

“Wild Wonder” Bird Treat Recipe

  • 4 cups black oil sunflower seeds
  • 2 cups millet seeds
  • 2 cups peanuts
  • 2 cups raisins or dried berries
  • 1 cup njyer
  • a dash of tender loving care

St. Albans Bay Suet Plus High Energy Wild Bird Suet

These suet cakes cost $7. 99 at the time of publishing and are housed in a cardboard box with ten packs. In hardware or big-box stores, the majority of 10-pack boxes of suet cost roughly $10, or $1 for each cake. In other stores, the price of suet cakes increases to $1 if you purchase them individually on a plastic tray. 29 to $1. 50 unless they’re on sale. Only 10-packs of suet are available at Aldi, and each suet cake costs about 80 cents. The case weight is 6 lbs. , 14 oz.

The box claims the cakes are packaged using eco-friendly materials, and each cake is contained in a “easy open” plastic wrapper. This indicates that, compared to suet in a tray, 20%E2%80%9COur%20wrappers%20use 80% less packaging by weight. This reduces the number of trucks on the road, energy use, and environmental effect. And our packaging is 100% recyclable!”.

I am able to recycle the box in my curbside recycling bin with ease, but I am unsure if any nearby facilities would accept the plastic wrappers, so I am unsure about the claim that it is 100% recyclable.

According to the box, the suet cakes have a high melt point formula, which makes them less prone to crumble in warmer weather. The box recommends refrigerating before use for easier handling. I just keep my suet cakes in a covered, rodent-proof metal trash can in my garage, and even in the summer, when it gets really hot outside, I never have any problems opening the packaging or handling the cakes.

Render beef suet, cracked corn, millet, and black oil sunflower seeds are the ingredients for the cake.

The suet cakes are manufactured by Wildlife Sciences in Minnetonka, Minn. The company sells a variety of suet products and suet feeders.

According to my observations, the suet cakes from Aldi have drawn birds just as much as the suet cakes I’ve bought from big-box retailers like Walmart and Home Depot, as well as from my neighborhood hardware store. This suet is regularly consumed by downy and hairy woodpeckers, flickers, juncos, chickadees, cardinals, wrens, and even robins in my Midwest backyard. A few starlings are also occasionally spotted nibbling on the suet. Because feeding suet is less messy and draws fewer unwanted or less desirable birds, I occasionally prefer it to sunflower seeds. Though not entirely uninterested, the squirrels also don’t give suet as much of their attention.

The only drawback is that Aldi’s suet isn’t always available for purchase, so when it is, I usually pick up a couple extra boxes.

FAQ

What is a cheap alternative to bird food?

Many types of birdseed are suitable for spring feeding, but you might also consider offering fruit for songbirds. (If you do use fruit, be sure to remove any leftover or spoiled pieces.) You can also offer crushed eggshells (rinsed and baked), which provide calcium for birds such as robins.
