can cockatiels live with other birds

Can 2 same sex cockatiels be kept together?

I’ve taken over my late Dad’s aviary; can two same-sex cockatiels be kept together? He has one surviving cockatiel in it. It’s not a young bird. I’m thinking of getting it a friend for company. Is similar age best? Same sex?.

Yes, same sex cockatiels can get along just fine. However, not all birds will get along. If you can locate another lonely older man, chances are they will get along. However, you must be ready in case they don’t get along. You could end up with two single older males. Place the cages next to each other if you get another one so they can get used to one another. It’s encouraging if they begin to converse vocally and sit close to one another. After you’ve introduced them, keep a close eye out for any indications of conflict. To ensure that no bird can stop the other from eating, you should set up two distinct food and water stations. Hopefully, they will get along and be able to share a cage.

Caging mixed species together

wishing to combine my two canaries, two parakeets, and two cockatiels into a large cage. Is there anything I should be concerned about? They see each other even though they are currently in different cages.

It’s a widely held belief that birds can live in harmony in cages with one another. Unfortunately, even in cases where the birds belong to the same species, this is not the case. If you don’t provide nests or breeding materials, birds of the same or different species may coexist peacefully in a large aviary. However, relationships frequently alter abruptly, and one bird may find itself the target of others’ harassment and abuse. It may be possible to cage your parakeets and cockatiels together if you have a sizable walk-in aviary, as long as you remember to never give them nests or nest boxes, provide plenty of food and water stations, and keep an eye on them during the first few days to make sure they get along. Following that, it’s important to check on them several times a day; never assume that everyone is still getting along. Zoos maintain mixed-species exhibits under observation and use cameras or observation windows. Even so, a swift attack on another bird could occur, and by the time you reach them, it might already be too late. Never keep parrots in a cage with a canary or any finch, commonly referred to as soft bills. Smaller birds can and will be killed by cockatiels and parakeets, and a soft bill is helpless against a hook bill. If all you have is a big indoor cage, it’s better if each pair stays apart. Parakeets can be hurt or killed by cockatiels, and female parakeets have the ability to become extremely territorial and even kill a cockatiel. Dr. In her Safety First webinar, which can be accessed via the link below, Lamb talked about the risks associated with mixing birds, particularly those of different sizes. Therefore, even though it would seem that it would be beneficial for birds to be among other birds, there are usually more risks than benefits. A few species can survive in colonies, but even so, breeding populations shouldn’t be established because conflicts can still arise.

FAQ

Can a cockatiel live with another bird?

There are no hard and fast rules about bird friendships. In general, birds of similar size are less likely to injure each other when they squabble (which they will, even if they are bonded). Cockatiels get along well with parakeets, & green cheek or dusky head conures.

Do cockatiels need a companion bird?

A single bird is fine as long as you spend a significant amount of time interacting with the cockatiel on a daily basis. If your lifestyle doesn’t allow this, a pair of birds will prevent loneliness and self-harming behaviour.

Should I get another bird for my cockatiel?

Another bird in its own cage can provide some companionship without the bonding. But if you handle your cockatiel, you are the companion so another cockatiel really isn’t necessary. And regardless of why you want a second cockatiel, there is no guarantee they will get along, even if you get a female.

Can a canary live with a cockatiel?

Do not ever cage a canary or any finch, also known as soft bills, with parrots. Cockatiels and parakeets can and will kill smaller birds, and a soft bill has no defense against a hook bill. If you simply have a large indoor cage, it is best for each pair to stay separate.
